Emergent Phenomena in correlated quantum materials

The emergent phenomena (i.e., new states of matter) is the hallmark of strongly interacting quantum materials. These can span from metal-insulator transition, magnetism, superconductivity to collective spin-, charge-, orbital- order and new phases emerged from their competition. For addressing the many-body problems, it is crucial to experimentally and theoretically characterize its interplay with microscopic pieces such as spin-orbit coupling, the electron-electron correlation, the superexchange, and electron-phonon coupling, etc. One of the key experimental techniques is Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) which is very sensitive to spin-, charge-, orbital-, and lattice- degrees of freedom. Due to the vast improvement of its energy resolution, RIXS has been shown as a promising technique for resolving charge, orbital, and spin excitations in many 3d, 4d, and 5dtransition metal oxides and form an important chapter in the research of the emergent phenomena of correlated quantum materials.

Current area of focus using RIXS
- Collective spin-, charge-, and orbital- excitations in quantum materials with intertwined charge or orbital order
- Heisenberg magnetism and excitonic magnetism
- Spin, orbital physics and spin-orbit coupling in model systems
Ke-Jin Zhou is the Principal Beamline Scientist of the I21 Resonant Inelastic soft X-ray Scattering (RIXS) beamline in Diamond Light Source which is the only national synchrotron X-ray photon light source facility in the United Kingdom. Besides the post in Diamond, he is currently supervising two PhD students jointly funded by Diamond and partner Universities.

Ke-Jin Zhou obtained his PhD degree from the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP), Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2007. During his PhD, he started exploring the application of RIXS on to strongly correlated electronic systems in Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility based in IHEP. Importantly, his PhD thesis was the first realisation of RIXS technique in Chinese synchrotron facilities.

From October 2007 to October 2008, Dr. Zhou carried out his postdoctoral research in Laboratoire de Chimie Physique-Matière et Rayonnement, University Pierre and Marie Curie, France, with a project titled as Electronic structure investigation of diluted magnetic semiconductors by using RIXS.

From October 2008 to April 2012, Dr. Zhou was a research fellow at Swiss Light Source, Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. His scientific focus is at the core of strongly correlated electronic systems including unconventional high Tc superconductors (copper oxides and iron-based superconductors), artificial oxide heterostructures, as well as low-dimensional quantum materials using high energy resolution RIXS. Dr. Zhou’s research work was highly recognized by the community and resulted in a few high-level publications (one paper in Nature, one paper in Nature Materials, one paper in Nature Physics, three papers in Nature Communications, one paper in Angewandte Chemie, and eight papers in Phys. Rev. Lett.).

In 2012, Dr. Ke-Jin Zhou took upon the post of Principal Beamline Scientist at Diamond Light Source, UK, for leading the Beamline project of the ultra-high energy resolution RIXS. His role is to lead the design, the construction and the delivery of the ultra-high energy resolution RIXS facility in Diamond, followed by the establishment of an in-house research group. The Beamline project was launched in April 2012 and the construction was completed by summer 2017. Since September 2017 the RIXS beamline (I21-RIXS) received more than 30 groups of users very successfully for being as the world leading RIXS facilities.

His scientific focus is the emergent phenomena of the strongly interacting quantum materials which include the metal-insulator transition, magnetism, superconductivity, collective spin-, charge-, orbital- order and new phases emerged from their interactions. He is particularly interested in experimentally characterizing the interplay of the quantum phenomena with microscopic pieces such as spin-orbit coupling, the electron-electron correlation, the superexchange, and electron-phonon coupling, etc, using ultra-high energy resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering technique.
