48 49 Detectors arranged around the X-ray beam on beamline I06. These sensors allow the identification of the polarisation state of the beam. (Image: Sean Dillow) An electron density map is derived from diffraction patterns, and from an electron density map a beautiful atomic model can be derived. This data enables scientists to understand where each of the atoms are and importantly what they are. This particular model is of a pathogen from the enterovirus family called EV-71, also known as Hand-Foot-and- Mouth. (Image: Sam Horrell)
