10 11 Extruder for delivering crystals suspended in liquid through the X-ray beam on beamline I24. This set-up is used for studying proteins at room temperature and allows scientists to study reactions over time. (Image: Andrew Brookes) This X-ray tomogram shows details of a hoverfly’s five eyes. The three at the top are small and, like our own eyes, have single lenses. The two compound eyes cover much of the head, and comprise of thousands of lenses each. Computationally cutting through the tomogram enables us to see the internal features of the fly’s eyes and brain. (Image: Gavin Taylor)
