Protein-based treatments within biotherapeutics face complex challenges including sensitivity to temperature, pH, large size, and rapid degradation in the body. Frequent administration is often necessary to maintain therapeutic levels, prompting scientists to seek enhanced delivery methods to improve efficacy. Lipids, special molecules found in our bodies, possess hydrophilic and hydrophobic segments that enable specific arrangements, rendering them excellent candidates for protein transport. Of particular interest are lipid cubic phases, unique structures capable of safeguarding proteins while facilitating controlled release.
Researchers from Cook Medical Ltd and the University of Limerick harnessed Small-Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) at Diamond to explore the viability of lipid cubic phases for efficient protein delivery. Their study encompassed a range of proteins, each with varying properties, to assess the potential for sustained release of active proteins over extended durations.
